The Role of Timing in Motion Design

Why the space between movements matters more than the movements themselves.

The role of timing in motion design

Timing is the most underrated skill in motion design. It's not about how many keyframes you can stack into a scene — it's about knowing exactly when to hold, when to ease, and when to snap.

Why Timing Gets Overlooked

Most people notice color, style, and composition first. Timing works underneath all of that, shaping how a piece feels without ever calling attention to itself. When it's done well, nobody mentions it. When it's off, everything feels wrong even if no one can say why.

The Difference Between Speed and Pace

Fast isn't the same as good. A rushed animation can feel just as clumsy as a slow one. Pace is about variation — quick moments followed by a beat of stillness, so the eye has time to register what just happened before the next cut.

How We Approach Timing on Every Project

We block out rough timing before touching a single polished frame. This "video reference" stage lets us test rhythm early, when changes are cheap, instead of discovering pacing problems after weeks of detailed animation work.

A Two-Second Example

Take a logo sting. Two seconds sounds simple, but inside that window there might be eight or nine individual timing decisions — when the shape starts moving, how it eases into its final position, how long it holds before cutting to black. Get even one of those wrong and the whole thing feels off.

Timing as a Storytelling Tool

We don't treat timing as a technical checkbox. It's part of the story. A held pause before a reveal builds anticipation. A hard, fast cut creates urgency. Every project starts with us asking not just what should move, but when — and why.
